Abstract EN

The issue of Cultural Identity has been a focus of interest for many scientific, philosophical, and even political disciplines since the intensity of talks about The Global Culture, heading towards generalization of its model, started rising to high momentums.

The Algerian society enjoys cultural diversity and plurality, and embraces a mosaic culture that yields one common cultural identity which emerged clearly when it was subjected to "violent" acculturation during the French occupation, something that transformed the Islamic religion, the Arabic and Berber languages, common history and common customs and traditions, as the Algerians' original elements of culture, to symbols that attracted revolutionary trends .

However, these essential elements have been dealt with through a variety of approaches -as we will discuss in this researchreflecting various and sometimes conflicting views, some of which betraying ideological influence.

There is no doubt that the influence of these approaches is still very visible to this date on the Algerian individual, evidence of which is present in the events related in general to the elements of the Algerian cultural identity, which Algeria has experienced since the independence.

Some issues related to the elements of national identity are still widely discussed as much amongst the Algerian intelligentsia as amongst the political or public circles, more in particular the issues of Arabisation, Berber language and Political applications of Islam.
