English Abstract

study explores the transformations of the Palestinian imprisoned body during interrogation and investigation.

It argues that the tools used by the Zionist Colonialism seek to alter the prisoner’s consciousness of his/her body, his/her identity and relation to the collective body of Palestinians in general.

Thus, this study’s aim is to understand the conceptual transformation, which includes the dual potentialities of Surrender-Resistance during interrogation.

The study relies on the written and oral narratives by the Palestinian political prisoners about their experiences of the interrogation stage in Israeli prisons.

The study demonstrates the importance of oral and written memory of the prisoners, as it is considered a tool of resistance in the face of Zionist attempts to exclude and marginalize the Palestinian voices, absenting them and substituting them with a Zionist narrative, in an attempt to dissolve their national consciousness.

Giving voice to the silenced memory of those who suffered pain and oppression is necessary, especially in a colonial context, like Palestine, because narrating memory gives a voice to the silence imposed on the Palestinian experience.

In the case of prisoners, studying the memory of pain and torture, of resistance and steadfastness in Occupation prisons, is a main and necessary step in writing the history of colonial imprisonment in Palestine.

study also analyses erasure as a concept and a process at the same time, in colonial and settler-colonial contexts.

The analysis thus focuses on the physical forms of erasure of r the people, the land, and/or the culture.

In addition to attempts to erase active, resistant bodies, which develop individually as well as in political groups.

Here, the tools of erasure differ depending on variables such as period and colonial security and political considerations.

thesis also focuses on the operations of power over the body in the prison system.

The thesis demonstrates that this power seeks to reproduce obedient individuals, loyal to and compliant to authority and its representations, regardless of the authority’s type and aims.

This becomes more salient in a colonial and settler-colonial situations, where the colonial authority seeks to obliterate the national consciousness and identity of the colonized people, through its prison system.

Thus, studying prisons under colonialism, sheds light on the ways the colonizer seeks to control the colonized by controlling their bodies and suppressing their national consciousness, inside as well as outside prisons.

Which means that studying the prisoners’ experience of imprisonment is also important to understand the general political situation in the Palestinian society, as well as bringing those who have been forcibly excluded (prisoners) back to the centre.
