Homonymy, as a linguistic phenomenon, is here considered in its theoretical and practical aspects.

Tlie paper is in fact an extract of a significant part of an awarded PH.D dessertation.

The distinction between the theoretical and the practical aspects of the problem made it more convenient to have the paper divided into two parts: one for the theoretical contribution made by various linguists on this semantical phenomenon.

Views of Arab linguists, old and modem, on Homonymy wiil be given special consideration, so as to show how effective they were in this respect.

Such views will, naturally, be assessed in the light of the significant role of the Europeanists in this area.

Tlie second part of the paper will tackle the side of application.

Quranic verses, which were selected and ordered in accordance with the theoretical orientation, were chosen as the examples for the application.
