Modern Phonetics studies the sound system of languages through two main branches: 1- Phonetics 2- Phonology The point views differed in defining the phoneme with the difference of the scholars' perspectives in explaining it.

Some of them depended on the phonetic aspect stressing the organic and auditory aspects and the manner of articulation.

Whereas others depended on the phonological aspects (functional) that studies the segmental structure of the language which differs from one language to another.

The scholars of Arabic applied the phonological system in the study of the segments in Arabic.

That is indicated through their realization of the characteristics of the segments in terms of structure and features.

The idea is based on the speech series.

The study of the kinds of segments in Arabic revealed the most important phonological characteristics.

The orientalists were the first to the segmental fabric of Arabic then; the Arab modernists followed them in the study of the Arabic segment of the word which is unique from the other languages.
