منذ فترة طويلة تم تجاهل الاضطراب الاكتئابي لدى الأطفال قبل سن البلوغ و لم يتم التعرف على الواقع العيادي لهذا المرض حتى السبعينيات.
في الواقع، و حتى هذا التاريخ، يؤكد العديد من المؤلفين أن مرض الاكتئاب لم يكن موجودا عند الأطفال بسبب النضج الناقص للحالات النفسية.
من ناحية أخرى، فإن مفهوم "الموقف الاكتئابي" كمرحلة أساسية وطبيعية في نمو الطفل كان موضوعا للتطور النظري الثري، في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين.
علاوة على ذلك، تمت دراسة آثار الانفصال في الوليد و الطفل، و تم التعرف على وجود معاناة عيادية.

Depressive disorder in prepubertal children has long been ignored and the clinical reality of this pathology was not recognized until the 1970s.
Indeed, until this date, several authors maintain that depression disease did not exist in children due to the incomplete maturation of psychic instances.
On the other hand, the concept of "depressive position" as a fundamental and normal stage of the child's development was the subject of a rich theoretical elaboration, in the first half of the 20th Century.
In addition, the effects of separation in the newborn and the child were studied, and the existence of clinical suffering was recognized.

Le trouble dépressif chez l'enfant prépubère a longtemps été ignoré et la réalité clinique de cette pathologie n'a été reconnue que dans les années 1970.
En effet, jusqu'à cette date, plusieurs auteurs soutenaient que la dépression maladie n'existait pas chez l'enfant du fait de la maturation incomplète des instances psychiques.
En revanche, le concept de "position dépressive" comme stade fondamental et normal du développement de l'enfant a fait l'objet d'une riche élaboration théorique, dans la première moitié du 20ème Siècle.
Par ailleurs, les effets de la séparation chez le nouveau-né et l'enfant ont été étudiés, et l'existence d'une souffrance clinique a été reconnue.
