Abstract EN

This study deals with an important and critical period in international relations, where Charles de Gaulle took power in France in 1958, and tended to develop new frameworks for French foreign policy.

He aspired to raise the status of France to gain an equal position with the United States and Britain in administering and controlling Europe's affairs on the one hand, and to make the allies consult with France on international issues on the other hand.

He also wanted to change the nature of the Atlantic Alliance in order to reduce the dominant position of the United States within the Alliance.

France quickly succeeded in having an independent nuclear power, and at the same time refused to accept any proposals from the allies which might limit its sovereignty and its foreign affairs policy.

This is why de Gaulle followed the policy of gradual decision-making with the member states, which, most importantly, resulted in the withdrawal of France from the NATO military organization in 1966.This policy demonstrates de Gaulle's political prowess in decision-making to withdraw from the NATO's military organization only, without withdrawing from the NATO agreement.
