Theories about the role of the state in the economy have evolved in the form of controversies, revolutions and counter-revolutions.
They have developed by taking into account the reality and concerns of Western economies or the advent of global crises or disasters.
On the other hand, the entire Western economy has seen a sustained increase in the weight of the State as measured by the share of public expenditure in GDP.
This "yes and no" theorization of the role of the state has thus been increasingly marginalized in favour of the how and by what means.
The New Public Management models have tried to respond to this without leaving the sphere of liberal economics.
This article is an essay, mainly theoretical, on the changing role of the state in the liberal economy.

Les théories abordant le rôle de l'État dans l'économie ont évolué sous formes de controverses, de révolutions et de contre révolutions.
Elles se sont développés en prenant en compte la réalité et les préoccupations des économies occidentales ou l'avènement des crises ou de catastrophes au niveau mondial.
D'un autre côté, toute l'économie occidentale a vu une augmentation soutenue du poids de l'État mesuré par la part des dépenses publiques dans le PIB.
Cette théorisation du oui et du non au rôle de l'État a été donc de plus en plus marginalisée au profit du comment et par quels moyens.
Le modèles du New Public Management ont essayé d'y répondre sans sortir de la sphère de l'économie libérale.
Cet article est un essai, principalement théorique, sur l'évolution du rôle de l'Etat dans l'économie libérale.
