Contemporary poets employed the symbol in their poems.

The use of symbol was varied and contrasted in their texts.

They used symbolism as a technique to show their poetic competency on the one hand, and refer to meanings which will berevealed by the reader, on the other.

Among the contemporary poets who used symbolism extensively, we can cite Mahmoud Darwish, where almost none of his poetic texts is free of symbols.

It can also be noticedthat the symbols that he used bear multiple meanings, that is a single symbol may refer to different meanings at the same time.

This feature made his style distinct.

The symbol is considered by Mahmoud Darwish as an important element in deepening the poetic meaning and one of the sources to influence the reader.

For the sake of these characteristics in his poetry, we chose the poemof "Lover from Palestine" as an example, to reveal how the symbol works in his poetry.
