Abstract EN

Given the considerable successes of Startups that exceeded all expectations, researchers have been focusing on developing a comprehensive theoretical framework for their concept and characteristics.

This paper aims to address the concept of Startups and their characteristics with a new approach highlighting deviations and conceptual limitations of the topic.

We depend on analyzing previous literature besides a systematic mapping study of their perspective that includes a sample of 134 papers from 40 journals included in three databases; Springer, Science Direct, and ASJP.

Findings indicate that the provided definitions were divided into three sections: sectoral, quantitative, and qualitative.

However, and broadly speaking, scholars agree that innovation, high growth, and severe uncertainty are essential elements in these concepts and in Startups characteristics.

We also concluded that scholars focused on the sectoral and quantitative concepts compared to the qualitative one with a considerable tendency towards the entrepreneurship frameworks when addressing the subject.
