In his novel the Candle and the Dark Corridors, El Taher WATTAR provided the readers with a comprehensive account of the nature of the struggle the Algerian intellectual was facing in his society.

Thus, the struggle is expressed through the disagreement and the rivalry between the characters of the novel.

For instance, the novel depicts vividly the loss and the distraction the Algerian intellectual was driven to through the character of the poet who found himself being distracted and lost in front of groups of people who espouse ideas and ideologies contrary to the Algerian intellectual's opinions and positions.

Thus, he was being hunted and threatened with death everywhere.

El Taher WTTAR's novel the Candle and the Dark Corridors faithfully reflects the situation of the Algerian intellectual who had a feeling that he was living in a strange society governed by groups of people who refuse dialogue.

Hence, the character of the poet portraying the Algerian intellectual's situation is doomed to die at the end of the novel for different reasons.

This research paper considers the situation the Algerian intellectual encountered during the dark decade when the intelligentsia was targeted by the terrorist groups who tried to hold the reins of power in Algeria in the 1990s.
