There exists a variety of means which control the changing of the meaning in the Arabic language.

The phoneme, being one of these means, has a prominent role in specifying and differentiating between the meanings of different terms.

Whether by substituting one silent letter for another (keeping and/or changing the vowel quality of the substituted silent), or by shifting the position of the silent letter within the same term.

Moreover, the meaning can be changed through shifting the vowel quality of a given silent letter within the same phoneme, as well as other ways that contribute in specifying the meaning, That's what we call the discriminatory function.

From here, we can ask: What are the mechanisms of this function that phoneme performs?
