Abstract EN

This article deals with the Spanish-French dispute on the organization of Catholic religious affairs in Morocco under the protectorate.

It also tackles the negotiations between the different parties concerned in order to reach an understanding that takes into account the new political context.

The task of France was not easy.

On the one hand, Spain refused to relinquish its historical rights and French Papal relations were tense because of the French anti-church policy.

Nevertheless, France was establishing its demands on the basis of the agreement signed between France and Spain on the 27th November 1912.

The agreement states, in the 8th article, that the religious framing of Christians depends on the political division.

The article also shows the stages of the negotiations and their contexts which eventually led the French part to govern the mission independently From Spain in 1923 and thus gained for France its apostolic district.
