Abstract EN

This study seeks to investigate the issue of polyphony in the novel of “Hadaeq Alkharif” (The Gardens of Fall) by Hassan al-Bandary.

However, due to many different critical approaches and concepts that have been associated with the concept of polyphony since its introduction by Michael Bakhtin in 1929, so we will only apply the concepts of Bakhtin and Ducrot in this study.

The current study was divided into three sections, it starts with defining the most critical concepts that the study will apply, then the second section will highlight the significance of “Hadaeq Alkharif” in the issue of polyphony, while the third section will focus on analyzing the polyphony through the mentioned novel.

The study came out with the following points : polyphony was established in the “Hadaeq Alkharif” in two main levels : in the characters' utterances, and in the utterances of the narrators and their actions.

Different characters in “Hadaeq Alkharif” were not just presenting their view points, yet also they were a sort of great bridge that accessed the reader to the society and its manners and beliefs.

Furthermore, the polyphony through the narrator' utterances and actions presented by : the overlapping between the characters' and narrator' voices in direct discourse, and in the indirect and free indirect discourse, and in the narrated discourse.
