The writer singled out Balkan countries with three novels : “In den Schluchten des Balkan” (In the gorges of the Balkans) (1884), “Durch das Land der Skiptaren” (Through the land of skiptars)(1887), and “Der Schut” (The shut) (1887).

The only major source for the average German citizen about the Balkans.

The research attempts to focus on the most important issues, which were mentioned in his three novels, to find out the results that the writer was aiming to reach and present to his readers : 1.

Did Karl May give a negative or positive stereotype about the governors of the Ottoman Empire and the peoples of the Balkans in his literary works ? 2.Did his writing contribute to bridging the gap and building understanding, or did it destroy bridges and deepen cultural differences ? 3.What are the reasons that prompted the writer to use humor and ridicule in describing society groups, the poor and the rich, princes and the police, civil servants and governors, peasants and soldiers ?
