Abstract EN

This study aimed to identify the impact of social networking on the values and family and social relationships on a sample of university students in Mukallah.

Besides, it sought to find out the positive and negative effects resulting from the use of the networking.

In order to achieve these aims, a questionnaire is conducted to collect data.

The sample of the study consisted of (123) students studying at Hudhramout University in Fowa Complex.

The students are chosen randomly from four faculties ( College of Arts, Women's College, Faculty of Administration Sciences, Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Faculty of Marine Biology .( One of the most important reasons that drive students to use social networking is for the purpose of doing scientific research, when the student failed to find resources in the library to use in their research.

Another reason is that the networking sites allow students to easily express themselves and give their opinions and attitudes which they cannot express openly and freely in a direct way .

Furthermore, the most important positive effects might include, on one hand, facilitating communication with friends and family, in addition, it results in open-mindedness and cultural exchanges .

On the other hand, the most important negative effects include that the networking might badly affect family relationship.

In addition, it might lead to a decline in their contributions and participation in family and social occasions.

This in turn might result in losing the social relations with the social environment in which they live.

It might also make the students create another social virtual community to live in through the relationships and conversations in which they do not use their real name.

Such relationships are considered temporary and they may not continue due to the fact that the students may feel a social pressure on them in the real community.

Consequently, this thing may prevent students from meeting face to face with the people whom they have established relationships through networking.

Thus, the social networking might compensate the need for meeting people whom they like by providing an easiest opportunity to build relationships.
