Abstract EN

The study aims at investigating the interpretation of '? ayy' in classical Arabic in the light of the contemporary theory of linguistics.

The study shows that '? ayy' can be interpreted as a universal quantifier, an existential quantifier, and a question word.

It is also argued that '? ayy' is a variable in the sense of Heim's notion of indefiniteness.

Accordingly, We argue that '? ayy' lacks inherent quantificational force, and that it gets its universal, existential, and interrogative interpretation by an operator that binds it.
