Saldae, is the ancient name of the modern city of Bejaia in Algeria, it was known as the city of knowledge and civilization.

once it's become a Phonecian resort, or even during the period of its annexation to Numedian and later to Mauretania, it has played an important role in the economic prosperity of the region.

despite a lack of information concerning the activities of the city and its port during this period, the historical evidence from later periods suggests the importance of the region, dor instance in roman times, the emperor Augustus established a colony for the veterans of the VIIth legion, increasing both its commercial importance due to its port; that allowed it to play a leading role in the flourishing commercial activity of the province of Mauretania caesariensis and later, of Mauretania sitifensis.
