Ideological and cultural techniques to hinder the rise of the phalanx. case study : John Steinbeck’s in dubious battle

The prime focus of the present paper is John Steinbeck's use of the ideological and cultural hegemony to prevent strikes.

His In Dubious Battle deals with the efforts of communists to organize a strike in California; however, the strike turns into a disaster.

The aim of our research is to trace out the reason behind the failure of the strike.

We argue that the strike fails as Steinbeck's purpose is to preclude the communists' rise to power and to preserve capitalism.

In order to do this, he makes use of cultural hegemony to manipulate people into thinking that labor strikes are doomed to fail.
