الملخص EN

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are mainly caused by presence and growth of certain microorganisms in the urinary tracts in human body which considered as one of the commonest bacterial infections among all age groups, especially in pregnancy period.

Untreated UTIs might be associated with serious obstetric complications.

This study was conducted to detect bacteria causing urinary tract infections among pregnant women in Tarhuna and Zliten public hospitals, in addition, to evaluate the appropriate effective antibiotic against the determined microorganisms.

Such study has been done among 90 pregnant women attending Tarhuna and Zliten public hospitals from November 2017 to March 2018.

The samples were collected from the microbiology unit of the main medical laboratories of previously mentioned hospitals.

Urinary Tract Infections were detected and diagnosed basing on urine specimens culturing, isolation, and identification.

The prevalence of pathogenic bacteria among the pregnant women was very high, especially in the age group of 25-30 years old.

The bacterium Escherichia coli was the most common UTIs causing microorganism, in fifty five (55) cases which represent, approximately (60%) of total bacterial isolates, followed by Proteus spp., fourteen cases (16%), then staphylococcus aureus, twelve cases (13%), followed by Klebsiella, five cases (6%), Streptococci, three cases (3%) and then Pseudomonas, two cases ~ (2%) respectively.

The bacteria; Escherichia coli, Proteus spp., and Staphylococcus aureus were highly sensitive to the antibiotics; Nitrofurantoin, Ofloxacin and Ciprofloxacin.

Urinary tract infections were prevalent among the studied cases, mostly due to accidently acquired infections or might be attributed to inadequate food and health behavior.
