Diagnostic accuracy of maxillary sinus ultrasound in comparison with spiral ct and operative findings

Background: In the seventies, A-mode U/S examination of the paranasal sinuses was introduced in the clinical practice a well recognized advantages over radiology which makes its routine use attractive.

Objective: To study the findings of maxillary sinus ultrasound in diagnosis of maxillary sinus disease &compare the results with that of computed tomography on one hand & the result of exploration of maxillary sinus on the other hand.

Also to calculate the diagnostic accuracy of maxillary sinus ultra sound.

Methods: The study involved sixty patients, aged 12-69 years with suspicion of maxillary sinus diseases.

All of them had been investigated by A-mode ultrasound either pre or postspiral computed tomography of nose& paranasal sinuses.

The results were compared & the sensitivity, specificity &accuracy were calculated.

Another reading of U/S was taken before maxillary sinus exploration &the results were calculated.

Results: 1-The results of comparing the U/S findings with CT were: sensitivity 76.4%, specificity 95.7%&accuracy 93.3%.

2-The results of comparing the U/Findings with operative findings of maxillary sinus exploration were: sensitivity 80%, specificity 94%&accuracy 95%.

Conclusion: The A-mode U/S is a diagnostic tool of accepted accuracy in the diagnosis of maxillary sinus diseases, although there are some limitations.

Its advantages are harmless, fast, and cheap& it's a portable device.
