الملخص الإنجليزي

Phytoremediation is an alternative strategy for the cleanup of heavy metal contaminated soils.

In this study, three fast growing woody species (Salix acmophylla, Populus alba and Populus nigra) have been investigated.

A pot experiment was done in a lath house at the College of Agriculture, University of Duhok.

Tree species grown in polluted soil with three levels of lead (0, 200 and 400 mg.kg-1 soil) for a period of 8 months.

The application of soil amendments [EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic Acid) and (NH4)2SO4 (Ammonium Sulfate)] has been proposed to enhance the metal concentration in the above ground harvestable plant parts.

The research work showed that the studied species accumulated more Pb in the roots compared with corresponding aerial parts.

The maximum concentrations of lead for S.

acmophylla, P.

alba and P.

nigra were (68.82, 64.64 and 62.42 mg.kg-1 d.

wt.) in the experimental pots treated with Pb 200 mg.kg-1 soil, and for the Pb 400 mg.kg-1 amended soils, the Pb accumulation increased only by (13.5, 16.7 and 17.3 %) respectively.

The statistical analysis showed that Pb accumulations in the shoots and roots of studied trees were not significantly different and accumulated the lowest concentration of Pb in the control treatment unlike other treatments which were significantly different in roots and shoots.

Accordingly, EDTA was superior to (NH4)2SO4 in enhancing the translocation of metals from roots to the aerial parts.

The plant species screened for Pb was moderate efficient for translocation of Pb from roots to shoots as revealed by their low TFs values (˂1).

Based on TFs values, the results highlighted that all plants had values < 1; accordingly they are moderate efficient to take up and translocation Pb from roots to shoots and indicated its suitability for phytoremediation by phytostabilization.
