Identification and characterization of aromatic compounds in rasco heavy gas oil

The produced Heavy Gas Oil (HGO) by Ras Lanuf Refinery (Rasco) is mixed with the heavy end or the residue to form heavy fuel oil which is a fuel for power plants, boilers, ships and industry.

The HGO contains different types of aromatic hydrocarbon compounds (mono, di and poly) aromatic compounds which negatively influence the HGO standard specifications.

The HGO aromatic compounds were separated in several subfractions by active silica gel and different organic solvents.

FT-ir, NMR spectroscopy and Gas chromatography-Mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques were used to identify and characterized these aromatic compounds.

The results of this research indicated that HGO contains low aromatic compounds content 9.30 wt%.
