Free non-vascularized fibular graft in treatment of bone defects

In order to determine the usefulness of free non-vascularized fibular graft in the treatment of nonunion and bone defects, a prospective descriptive study was conducted from June 1994 to June 2005 on a total of 19 cases with nominated long bone fractures, post-traumatic, post bone tumor / cyst resection and post osteomyelitis bone defects.

Overall union was achieved in 89.5% of cases.

Stress fracture occurred in 2 (10.5%) cases in lower limb.

Infection and graft restoration occurs in three (15.8%) cases.

Use of free non-vascularized bone graft in selected patients with suitable recipient bed is a simple and cost-effective procedure and still valid to bridge defects.
