This article explores the history and use of the various terms used to designate west Asia and / or the middle east , both from perspective within the culture of shared traits and perceptions, and from perspectives developed outside of the region.

With the considerable attention of the world presently on the region usually called the middle east , it is important to better understand the basis for terms used to define an environmental , geographical and cultural region ad a single unit.
