Translation is a skill , education and a profession .

At the university level translation programs should be handled properly, thus, teaching translation demands knowledgeable teacher and ambitious, well-equipped learner.

The present study aims at developing university students’ linguistic skills in translation.

It is held that the acquisition of linguistic competence alone cannot satisfy the needs of foreign language learners (FLL) in their translation tasks.

There are several types of competence which should be developed and implemented in teaching translation to FLL.

These include, in addition to, linguistic competence, communicative competence, translation competence which should be supplemented by other four types of competence, viz., equivalences, computercorpora, extra-linguistic competence and contrastive bicultural competence.

The present program for the teaching of translation at the College of Languages falls short as far as the recent methods introduced to translation studies.

The students are faced with translation tasks in the form of passages of different lengths relevant either to scientific or literary disciplines supplemented with a short glossary giving the meaning of difficult terms in Arabic or English depending on the required task.

sometimes, the students are allowed to use a dictionary in class, and also in the examinations.

This is, unfortunately, unproductive and time consuming, often resulting in poor performance similar to google translation.

Hence, an inter-competency approach for a better teaching of translation has been proposed in order to remedy such a situation.

The paper ends up with some recommendations for both teachers and students, which might, hopefully be incorporated into the FLL university students translation programs.
