Third space and multiculturalis : a postcolonial study in Betool Khedairi’s A Sky so Close

Postcolonialism has become one of the most exciting, rapidly expanding and challenging areas of literary and cultural studies today.

This paper examines Betool Khedairi’s A Sky so Close, a contemporary Iraqi novel within the context of the postcolonial theorist Homi k.

Bhabha’s notion of “the Third Space” and “cultural hybridity”.

As a multi-faceted plethora of challenging thematic implications exile, ideality, politics, migration and cultural appropriation, the novel lends itself to Bhabha’s cultural endeavor to reframe a “third space” in which cultural hybrid idea tithe, emerge on a new though unrecognizable zone of possible representation.

The novel is situated in the destabilized zone of closeness and distance; reflecting the clash between two different sets of values and loss of identity.

The paper focuses its concern on the dilemma of a woman who stands at the intersection of two cultures and face differences of tradition, religion, race, class, and language.

Women’s struggle against these factors might be added to the oppression of patriarchy that they experience within their native communities.

Women are thus victimized by the mutually supportive processes of colonialism and patriarchy
