Assessment literacy refers to basic assessment related knowledge and skills that enable EFL teachers to effectively manage and monitor the learning process in general and their students’ progress, in particular.

Without being able to assess students accurately, EFL teachers can not assure the achievements of the intended language learning objectives within classrooms.

The present study aimed at investigating the use of Task based learning for developing in-service EFL teachers’ assessment literacy skills.

The study sample consisted of 30 preparatory school teachers at some language governmental schools, Giza Governorate, Ministry of Education.

The study adopted the quasi-experimental design.

A TBL program was designed to enhance EFL teachers’ assessment literacy and skills in general and language classroom assessment practices in particular.

The study instruments included a needs analysis questionnaire and a pre¬post assessment literacy test.

Data were analyzed by means of qualitatively and quantitively.

Despite the limitations in the design and execution of the study, the TBL proposed program improved teachers’ knowledge and skills of assessment and can serve as an efficient and effective tool.

The study findings revealed that in- service EFL teachers’ assessment literacy can be improved by a TBL program as a tool of professional development.

Approaches for improving the classroom assessment literacy of preparatory school teachers should emphasize varied well designed learning tasks.
