As communication is inevitable, it is one of the most prominent manifestations of human existence.

When a recipient receives a statement, s/he may understand it linguistically (lexically and semantically).

Indeed, the exchange does not transcend the rules of linguistic convention, though.

Moreover, the receiver may understand the same statement on the basis of deductive/inferential or interpretive processes that depend on the cultural context and shared knowledge.

The present paper tries to study the dyad of coding and inference in the communication process by eliciting the following questions: Is communication based on coding and decoding? Or is understanding based on deductive and inferential processes? In this article, the concept of communication and its coding-based models are exposed, and some examples of deductive/inferential mechanisms of exchanging and understanding statements are shown.

La communication se presente comme une des plus importantes manifestations de l’existence de l’etre humain car il est impossible qu’il puisse exister sans communiquer avec ses semblables.

Quand un recepteur re^oit un message, il le comprend d’apres les donnees linguistiques, lexicales et semantiques qu’il possede.

Dans ce cas-la, l’echange ne depasse pas les regles des pratiques langagieres.

Le recepteur peut donc cerner le sens du message en vertu du processus de deduction et d’inference et parfois meme en vertu d’un processus d’interpretation en raison du contexte culturel et de la connaissance commune.
