The relationship between dental plaque and the severity of gingival enlargement induced by cyclosporine

Objective : To assess the relationship between dental plaque and the severity of gingival enlargement induced by cyclosporine A.

Methods : Twenty renal transplant patients; 18 males and 2 females, who agreed to participate in this study were examined and followed-up in the dental clinic at Prince Rashid Ben AL-Hassan hospital.

Each patient underwent a clinical assessment before and after periodontal treatment including plaque index, gingival index, and gingival overgrowth index and probing depth at mesial, buccal, distal and lingual surfaces of the teeth.

Results: The mean age of the patients was 31.5 years (18- 45 years).

All patients showed varying levels of gingival inflammation, gingival enlargement and plaque scores.

There is a relation between plaque index, gingival enlargement index and gingival inflammation index before and after periodontal treatment that was statistically significant but these relations were poor.

Conclusions: The present study has demonstrated a correlation between dental plaque and cyclosporine A induced gingival enlargement.

A marked reduction in the levels of gingival inflammation and gingival enlargements was recorded following treatment by decreasing the level of plaque scores, which represent the level of oral hygiene.
