The universal themes of peacefulness and forgiveness as well as the calls for ending violence and extremism are central in the speech of Pope Francis that he delivered in his first international trip to Iraq in March 2021.

This paper aims to investigate this speech linguistically, namely in terms of the semantic and pragmatic perspectives.

The objective is to find out how these themes have been conveyed semantically and pragmatically and via which theories.

A developed model has been adopted to investigate the semantic and pragmatic strategies utilized by the Pope in his speech.

The analysis shows that some lexical relations are utilized in terms of the semantic level.
