The impact of gender on reading comprehension : teachers' perspective

The aim of the present study was to identify teacher's perspectives on the impact of gender on reading comprehension among elementary school students.

In particular, the study was expected to reveal how various aspects of gender affect comprehension between male and female students.

The participants were 10 female teachers from international schools within the capital who had at least 2 years of experience teaching male and female students.

The primary source of data was semi-structured interviews with each teacher having to answer a total of 15 open-ended questions.

The data was analyzed through thematic coding.

The results revealed a number of factors associated with gender that affect comprehension.

Some of these factors include differences in maturity rates and social/cultural influences and behavior among others.

The participants also revealed some of the strategies they used to use to try and minimize that gap and some of the challenges they face teaching mixed gendered classrooms.
