Prevalence of diabetes and abnormalities of carbohydrate metabolism in the Jordanian armed forces male personnel

Objective: To determine the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glucose among the Jordanian Armed Forces male personnel adopting the world health organization and the American diabetes association criteria.

Methods: Data for the present study were obtained from a comprehensive survey of cardiovascular risk factors among the Jordanian Armed Forces personnel.

The survey was undertaken during June and July, 1997 on a probability sample of 6760 male subjects.

Plasma glucose measurements; fasting and two hours after a 75gm oral glucose challenge were among the obtained data.

Results: Using the world health organization criteria, the prevalence rates of diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance were 1.5 % and 2.0 %, respectively.

About two thirds of the diabetic subjects were previously known to have diabetes.

Using the American diabetes association criteria, the prevalence rates of diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting glucose were 1.7 % and 2.9 %, respectively.

Conclusion: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus among male personnel in the Jordanian Armed Forces was close to that observed among comparable age groups in the general population
