Nuclear research reactors can be divided, according to how nuclear fuel is mixed with the coolant or moderator, to two types: homogeneous reactors and heterogeneous reactors.

They also can be divided according to their power to three types: low power research reactors, medium power research reactors and high power research reactors.

They are used for several applications such as: conducting researches in reactor physics and solid state physics, analysing unknown samples using Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) method, detecting cracks in solids using the neutron radiography method, producing semi-conductors using the silicon doping method by irradiating the silicon with neutrons in the research reactors.

Nuclear research reactors can also be used for educating nuclear engineering students, and training of the managing staff to operate and maintain the research reactor safely.
