الملخص EN

Introduction: Obesity is a common health problem in Saudi Arabia.

Traditionally, was considered a sign of health and wealth and in women a symbol of fertility and womanhood.

Objectives: to find out the prevalence of obesity and overweight among female schoolgirls and its psychosocial correlates.

Results: the prevalence of overweight and obesity was 22%.

There is a direct linear relationship between mean body mass index and age, higher school grades, smaller family size and living more than six months in the West.

Those who were dissatisfied about their body shape were of an older age group, had more contact with the West and higher depressive scores.

Discussion: Results are compared to national and international studies and explained in cultural terms.
