Translation students mistakes in translating commonly used English sentences and phrases into Arabic: comparing graduates of the scientific branch with graduates of literary branch

The study goal is to bypass the students of the Translation Department / First stage of the Faculties of Arts of the Mustansiriyah and Al Iraqiya Universities the mistakes in translating commonly used English sentences and phrases into Arabic.

to achieve the goal of the study, the researcher addressed commonly used English sentences and phrases that included (20) questions to translate in an exact sense not literally by students of the translation department / first stage / Faculty of Arts in the universities of Mustansiriyah and al-Iraqiya.

the answers of the research sample's students who graduated from the preparatory school / scientific branch were compared with those who graduated from the literary branch.

by comparing the answers of the researched students, the study found that the answers of the scientific branch students were higher than those of the literary branch, which was due to a number of reasons, among which they have enrolled in courses and lectures prior to the ministerial examinations.

the study recommends that translation departments instructors have to conduct interactive qualifying tests for students in general and for graduates of the literary branch in particular, and prepare future training courses for students admitted to the translation department with a view to informing them to the competence of translation and the possibilities, challenges, and difficulties they may face prior to the commencement of the specialty curriculum.

it also recommends that additional electronic lectures be prepared for students in general and for literary branch graduates, in particular, to enrich their information and acquire higher skills in the specialty.
