Evaluating nurses' performance regarding application of discharge plan for elderly patients at Beni-Suef university hospital

Background : Discharge-planning process in hospitals is inherently complex.

Information from many sources must be gathered, including patient-specific information regarding functional status and patient and family preferences.

Aim of study : the study aimed to evaluate nurses’ performance regarding application of discharge plan for elderly patients at Beni-Suef university hospital.

Subjects and methods : A descriptive design was used to achieve the aim of the current study.

The study was conducted in Beni-Suef university hospital.

A convenient Sample of all available nurses (100) in out-patient and in-patient worked at Beni-Suef university hospital and who accepted to participate in the study.

Two data collection tools were used to collect data of the current study; tool I : interviewing questionnaire tool, was used to collect nurse knowledge regarding discharge plan and, tool II: observation checklist was used to collect nurses’ practice.

Results : There is a significant and highly significant relation between studied nurses’ performance (knowledge and practice) regarding elderly discharge plan and their age, years of experience and educational qualification.

There is a highly positive association between nurses' total level of knowledge and practices regarding the discharge plan.

Conclusion and recommendations : The vast majority of nurses had inadequate knowledge and nurses had unsatisfactory practice regarding elderly discharge planning.

Providing sufficient educational and instructional program for staff nurses that working with elderly people.
