The banking sector is one of the most vital sectors of the economy and its importance as the "lifeline" of economic activity came as a result of the banks' close ties to our daily lives and our various activities such as paying salaries, withdrawing, paying bills, buying houses, building deposits, borrowing money and other banking transactions.

That banking stability is based primarily on public confidence means that the problems of one of these banks can be easily transferred to banks and other financial institutions and any major disruption in banking operations will affect the community as a whole and based on this basis the researcher tried to show the importance of diversification of diversifying the investment portfolio of the Iraqi commercial banks and its role in providing a degree of protection against crises by reducing investment risks with the possibility of improving investment returns and profits, and was one of the assumptions adopted by the research is the lack of efficiency in the diversification of the investment portfolio.

The researcher used the financial and statistical analysis of the financial data of the Bank of Baghdad sample of the research as one of the Iraqi banks for the period from 2004 to the first half of 2018 to show the diversification in his portfolio investment as well as the existence of correlation and impact between the components of the investment portfolio and profitability, Which was the most important that there is diversification in the investment portfolio of the Bank of Baghdad and he adopted the principle of diversification of investment in its investment operations and expressed interest in other areas of investment and among the recommendations contained in the research that it is necessary to The Central Bank of Iraq to ease the investment restrictions of banks and make them more flexible and take into account the diversification of banks investment portfolios when making investment, as is the case in the Bank of Baghdad and rely on efficient cadres in its investment management
