الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aims at investigating the diminutive forms of Jordanian Arabic as uesd in Southern Amman in terms of the patterns (templates) and structures which govern the formation of diminutive within the framework of Optimality Theory (OT).

Throughout the analysis of the collected data from the Southern Amman Dialect (SAD) , it is found that the formation of diminutive forms in (SAD) is based on the following patterns, respctively; the first template is [ɪcceɪc→’f‘eɪl] which is used for tri-consonantal root nouns, and the second template is [ɪcceɪcɪc→’f‘eɪ‘ɪl] which is used to form diminutive from Quadriconsonantal root nouns.

The third template is (ɪcceɪcɪ:c→’f‘eɪ‘ῑl) which is used for Quinary-consonantal root nouns or the four consonantal nouns with a long-vowel in the second syllable.

Among the findings of the current study are the patterns (templates) in SAD which are different from the templates that are used in Classical Arabic (CA), and the reason behind the differences is the application of some phonological processes such as addition, deletion and insertion of some segments either vowels, consonants or diphthongs.

When accounting for phonological processes that are involved in the formation of the diminutive in SAD within OT, the study found that those phonological processes are caused by two factors ; the first is the conflict between the constraints that are used in SAD in the present study, and the second is the number of consonants in a given root noun.
