Altun Kupri is located in the central region of northern Iraq within the borders of Kirkuk Governorate, on the road between Kirkuk and Erbil, and on the left bank of the Little Zab River, about 44 km from the center of Kirkuk Governorate, and the search area extends with an area of 384, 8 km2 between latitudes (35° 38' 24'' – 35° 49' 12'' north), and longitudes (44° 5'50'' – 44° 22' 30'' east), bordered on the north by the governorate Erbil and from the west it is bordered by Al-Multaqa district, from the southwest it is bordered by Dibs district, from the east it is bordered by Shawan district, and from the south it is bordered by the center of Kirkuk district and Yaiji district.

Maps of levels of suitability and land ability are produced, showing that the flood plain unit is far from the floods of the Zab River and the aggregate plain unit toward the southeast are the most suitable lands for exploitation (slope 8, erosion 6, slope direction 4, risks of floods torrential rains and tectonic activity 2, linear and earthquakes 1.5) are classified into three levels, low, medium and high-risk areas.
