Some regions with joint ties try to secede, or threaten to secede from the nation-state, to achieve political, economic and cultural goals, and use the secession paper whenever these components feel the need to grant them more privileges, as is the case with the Spanish region of Catalonia and Iraqi Kurdistan.

The similarity between the case of the region of Catalonia and the region of Kurdistan, does not lie in the historical march of them, especially the long struggle against the highly centralized totalitarian regimes such as (Franco) In Spain, and (Saddam Hussein) in Iraq, and even the similar circumstances between the two regions, not to mention the future and the consequences of the secession referendum.

Therefore, the researcher sought to make a comparison between the two regions to find out the similarities and differences between the two cases.

The study aims to clarify the role of geographical components in the separatist tendency of the two regions, as well as to clarify the historical roots, motives and repercussions of separatism, in addition to making a comparison between the referendums on secession and foreseeing the geopolitical future for them by developing a number of scenarios.
