الملخص EN

Diabetes is considered one of the most widely-spread chronic diseases.

Given its chronic nature, and the difficulty to adapt with its dietary and therapeutic requirements, the approach considered in this study was to look for dietary or herbal substitutes, as main or supportive treatments to reduce the toxicity of the chemical drugs and also the cost of the treatment.

Study the effect of a group of plants (6 g/day Trigonella seeds, 2 g/day Nigella sativa seeds and 6 g/day medicago sativaleaves) in a form of phytogenous mixture in reducing the insulin resistance.

The study was carried out on three groups of human volunteers with type II diabetes, who could not control their blood glucose levels to the required value in spite of regular medicines administration.

The volunteers (n = 36) were equally divided to a group (P), in which the chemical treatment was replaced with a mixture of the above plants, and a group (M) which the plant mixture was administered while maintaining chemical treatment, and a group (S) which is a control group that takes chemical medicines only for 45 days.

The blood samples were collected and measured the blood glucose concentrations, and BMI (body mass index) was calculated, the insulin concentrations were measured, the insulin resistance was calculated, ALT and AST assay at the start and end of the study.

It was shown through the comparisons that there is a statistically significant reduction (p<0.01) in insulin resistance in group (M) (from 4.71±1.32 to 3.81±1.09), which caused by a significant reduction of blood glucose (from 197±14.39 to 169.16±12.81), and an insulin reduction (from 9.69±2.50 to 9.10±2.37), and also a significant reduction was observed in BMI value (from 33.8±2.04 to 32.55±1.86).

Also no statistically significant difference was noted in the values of resistance insulin in group (P), in spite of significant increase of blood glucose (from 169.92±14.75 to 187.16±15.23) and the insulin reduction (from 8.76±2.18 to 8.23±2.01).

Also a significant reduction was observed in BMI values (from 35.7±1.60 to 35.3±1.66), where no significant difference was observed in the values of ALT &AST in both groups (M&P).

There was a reduction of insulin resistance and BMI value, at the combination of plant mixture with chemical treatment for (M) group, while in group (P) which took the plant mixture alone, it maintained the values of insulin resistance, in spite of increased blood glucose and no change in hepatic enzymes in both groups.
