Rupture of hydatid cyst in the interventricular septum

Hydatid disease (echinococcosis) is a zoonotic infection of humans caused by Echinococcus granulosus.

The disease poses an important public health in many areas of the world, particularly among populations that practice sheep husbandry.

Cardiac muscle involvement with hydatid disease is rare.

We report a case of a 25-year-old Syrian male who presented with an anaphylactic reaction, secondary to rupture of a hydatid cyst in the interventricular septum into the bloodstream.

The cyst is demonstrated by a transthoracic echocardiogram in the parasternal long-axis view.
