Embolization of the vesical arteries in the management of intractable bladder hemorrhage due to tumor

Objective.: Bleeding is a common presentation of bladder tumors? Most bleeding can be managed conservatively; however, in certain circumstances it can be severe and hard to control.

In this prospective study we evaluate the efficacy of arterial embolization in the control of bladder hemorrhage.

Methods : Thirty-two patients who presented with severe intractable bleeding secondary to bladder tumors and failed to respond to conservative management underwent embolization of the branches of the hypogastric arteries to control bleeding.

Results: Effective control of bleeding was achieved in 30 patients (94%) and failed in 2 (6%).

Conclusion: Effective control of bleeding from bladder tumors can be achieved with percutaneous embolization with low morbidity and mortality.
