Western Sudan is the oldest Islamic country that knew tobacco smoking after the Portuguese brought this plant and its seeds to those countries since the late ninth century AH/ fifteenth AD; So it was grown in it, and it became a source of tobacco, from which it reached the countries of the Maghreb and then to Egypt and other Islamic countries.

The phenomenon began to spread steadily among the Sudanese society; which sparked a jurisprudential controversy around it.

However, raising controversy at that time does not mean the beginning of the phenomenon of tobacco smoking in Western Sudan.

By referring to the manuscript and printed sources, it is noted that some of them date the beginning of the phenomenon in Western Sudan in the year 1000 AH, while others indicated that the phenomenon occurred within the year 1005 AH/ 1596 AD.
