This is an investigation of fructose dehydration to 5HMF; catalysed by green and novel Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES), which is composed of long carbon chain dicarboxylic acid (adipic acid) as hydrogen bond donor (HBD) and choline chloride (ChCl) as organic salt (HBA).

The dehydration reaction was carried out in open system at mild reaction conditions.

100% fructose conversion was achieved, giving 5HMF yield and selectivity of 90.8%.

The reaction was conducted at mild conditions of 90 °C reaction temperature and atmospheric pressure, using DES molar mixing ratio of 1:1 and initial fructose ratio of 2.5 w% at reaction time of 1hr.
