الملخص AR

Objectives: To identify possible risk factors for spontaneous abortion in Syrian women.

Methods: The association of potential risk factors with spontaneous abortion was assessed in a case-control study conducted at the Maternity Teaching Hospital in Damascus.

In all, 359 cases of spontaneous abortion and 739 controls with normal deliveries were studied.

Cases and controls were interviewed to determine the history of potential exposure.

Results: In multivariate analysis, factors independently associated with increase risk of spontaneous abortion were: maternal age of 31 or older (OR=2.25, 95% CI: 1.49-3.42),psychological stress during pregnancy (OR=2.67, 95% CI: 1.39-5.1), and consumption of cigarettes during the first trimester of pregnancy (OR=2.71, 95% CI:1.69-4.34).

Conclusion : The study confirmed some of the risk factors previously demonstrated in other studies.

It documented, for the first time, risk factors for spontaneous abortion in Syrian women.

It reaffirms the risks of tobacco consumption during pregnancy.

The area of psychological stress needs additional study.
