الملخص EN

Objectives : Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon but life threatening multi-microbial soft tissue infection characterized by a progressive, usually rapid, necrotizing process of the subcutaneous tissues and fascial planes with resulting gangrene of the skin and systemic toxicity.

Methods : A retrospective study of 12 cases seen during 11 years.

The etiological, clinical and microbiological features were reviewed.

Treatment included broad-spectrum antibiotics, aggressive surgical intervention, and supportive therapy.

Results : There were 7 males and 5 females ranging in age from 2 months to 84 years.

Five patients were diabetic.

Trauma was the most common cause and the lower limb was the most frequent site.

Seven patients (58%) died, of whom 4 were diabetic.

Streptococci were the mpst common microbes isolated followed by pseudomonas.

Conclusion :the condition must be recognized early to prevent unnecessary morbidity and mortality.
