Iraqi EFL University students' manipulation of pragmatic terms

This study sheds light on Iraqi EFL learners' abilities to handle pragmatic terms as an indispensable part of the EFL learners' communicative competence which is substantially different from linguistic competence because the former is associated with language use and, in consequence, constitutes a daunting challenge for all foreign learners of English as James (1980 : 21) sustains.

This work classifies pragmatic terms into two groups: those, which are pragmatic one hundred percent in character, and those which are related to pragmatics and another linguistic discipline.

It is worth noting that this research is restricted to the main pragmatic terms that are of concern to the university students, overlooking the trivial concepts and details.

After surveying such terms, the current study considers a questionnaire made for a representative sample of one hundred students chosen randomly from the 4th year level (academic year 2021-2022) in the Department of English, College of Education for Human Sciences, Al Muthanna University with the purpose of checking those learners' abilities in this regard.
