E-government can be a powerful and important tool especially in developing countries facing a number of challenges, such as weak public services, unemployment, poor health, spread of crime, housing crisis, violence, and poor education.

It represents a new opportunity for local governments to participate in governance and demand reform of basic business processes.

This paper aims to explore the e-government concept and provide the reader with basic knowledge of the e-government fundamentals.

The paper presents, in an easy to understand terms, a comprehensive summary of the e-government concept including what it’s, its architecture, its categories, its importance, and the issues that must be overcome for an e-government initiative to succeed.

We also illustrate an adopted framework of an e-government architecture which can help governments who are planning to adopt an e-government initiative.

The importance of this research lies in the importance of the e-government as a new way of governance in the modern world.

This research mainly relied on data gathered from conducting a literature search on the subject.
