الملخص EN

The root chloroformic, methanolic and aqueous extracts of Clitoria ternatea L.

were subjected to a preliminary screening for antibacterial activity against four standard organisms (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa).

The root methanolic extract of C.ternatea exhibited high activity towards all of the tested organisms.

The aqueous extract showed moderate activity while the chloroform extract showed the least activity.

The active extracts were further tested against 22 isolates collected randomly from clinical cases.

The minimum inhibitory concentrations of the extracts were determined.

The plant extracts were also tested for activity against standard fungi, Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cervisiae.

Known antibiotics were tested for activity against the standard organisms and the results were compared with the activity of the plant extracts.
